The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has announced its decision to implement a prepaid mode for electricity bills starting from June 2023. Approximately 55,000 consumers with smart meters installed in the initial phase will be required to pay their bills using the prepaid system.

Chief Engineer of KPDCL, Javed Yousuf Dar, stated in an interview with Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that consumers will make payments through the “Smart Bill Sahuliyat Platform,” a mobile application specifically designed for prepaid electricity billing. Dar emphasized that consumers will have the freedom to recharge their accounts with any desired amount, as there is no fixed payment requirement.

The conversion to prepaid mode will commence with the settlement of pending dues for the month of May. Once the payments are cleared, consumers will be eligible for the prepaid system. After recharging, consumers will be able to monitor their electricity usage and check their remaining balance.

Initially, the prepaid services will be launched for the 55,000 smart meters installed in the first phase. The remaining smart meters installed subsequently will be made eligible for the prepaid services at a later stage.

To promote the adoption of prepaid billing, KPDCL has published an advertisement offering a 2% monthly discount for consumers registered under the prepaid mode. The advertisement also encourages consumers to register online, highlighting that only those with smart meters installed in the first phase are eligible for the prepaid conversion.

Furthermore, KPDCL advises consumers to recharge their accounts regularly to maintain a continuous power supply. The prepaid system will facilitate monitoring of the remaining balance and daily electricity usage through the Smart Bill Sahuliyat Platform.

Earlier this year, KPDCL announced its plan to register all new prospective consumers under the prepaid basis, aiming to keep up with advanced technology while ensuring transparency and empowering consumers. As part of ongoing reforms, new connections will be provided with smart meters equipped with prepaid functionality for bill payment.

This move by KPDCL marks a significant step towards enhancing the efficiency and convenience of electricity billing in Kashmir, benefiting both the consumers and the power distribution system.
