UIDAI Issues Warning Against Fraudulent Aadhaar Update Requests via Email and WhatsApp

In a recent advisory, the Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI) has cautioned citizens against responding to email or WhatsApp messages that request personal documents for updating Aadhaar details. The UIDAI emphasized that legitimate requests for Aadhaar updates are only processed through their official website or authorized Aadhaar facilitation centers.

As part of their efforts to ensure data security and protect individuals from potential scams, the UIDAI clarified that no email or instant messaging service is utilized for collecting supporting documents related to Aadhaar updates. The authority highlighted that sharing personal information through such channels could lead to fraudulent activities, including identity theft and financial fraud.

Furthermore, the UIDAI encouraged citizens to proactively update their Aadhaar information, even though it’s not mandatory to do so every ten years. By keeping the data accurate and up to date, individuals can contribute to the overall quality of information within the Aadhaar system.

For those looking to update their Aadhaar details, the UIDAI portal is offering free document updating services until September 14. Additionally, public facilities such as Akshaya centers offer the same service for a fee of Rs 50.

Thiruvananthapuram’s Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has introduced a crucial change to enhance the security of vehicle sales and curb fraudulent practices. The MVD has declared that, effective immediately, Aadhaar-linked mobile phone numbers of vehicle owners are required for updating vehicle documents.

Previously, an Aadhaar-linked mobile number was mandatory only for new vehicle registrations, while old vehicle sales did not require such a linkage. This loophole led to instances of unauthorized vehicle sales and transfer of ownership without the knowledge of the original owners. To address this issue, the MVD’s new policy mandates the inclusion of the Aadhaar-linked mobile phone number in the National Register of Vehicles.

This decision comes in response to a High Court notice, which demanded an explanation from the MVD regarding cases of vehicles being sold without the consent of rightful owners.
